The Vodacom Bulls and Director of Rugby Jake White have officially parted ways by mutual agreement, concluding a five-year tenure marked by silverware, strategic growth, and a significant contribution to South African rugby.
White, who joined the Bulls in 2020, delivered immediate results, securing the Super Rugby Unlocked title and back-to-back Carling Currie Cup championships during his first season. Under his leadership, the Bulls made three Vodacom United Rugby Championship (URC) Grand Final appearances and progressed to the knockout stages of both the Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup.
CEO Edgar Rathbone commended White’s impact on the club’s rugby ecosystem. “Jake brought immense rugby intellect to Loftus, and his influence has been felt across all levels of our structures. He helped restore the Bulls to competitive prominence and laid a solid foundation with a promising generation of young players,” Rathbone said.
“He also played a pivotal role in player development — 10 players graduated to the Springboks during his tenure. His work has ensured that we remained competitive across competitions, and for that, we are deeply grateful.”
Club president Willem Strauss echoed these sentiments, paying tribute to White’s influence both on and off the field. “Jake’s commitment extended beyond the high-performance environment. He helped strengthen our grassroots development by integrating club and professional structures,” said Strauss. “He has left an enduring legacy, not just in trophies but in the values and resilience he instilled. His leadership will be remembered with deep respect.”
Reflecting on his departure, White emphasised the need for the team to evolve under new guidance. “With years of coaching experience, I felt it might be difficult to elevate this squad further under my leadership. The time is right for a new voice,” White said. “It has been a privilege to coach the Bulls and be part of this great club’s history. I want to thank the players, staff, supporters, shareholders, and board for their belief and dedication. Hou die blou bo.”
White’s departure marks the end of a significant era for the Bulls, as the franchise begins its search for a new director to build upon the platform he has helped establish.
