As South Africa commemorates Nelson Mandela Day, education non-profit Funda Wande announces a meaningful extension of Mandela’s legacy with a special literacy activation featuring beloved storyteller Dr. Gcina Mhlophe as schools reopen.
The 3rdAnnual Mandela Day 2025 literacy activation will take place on Friday, 25 July 2025 at Kalksteenfontein Primary School, perfectly timed as learners return from the school holidays, ready to embrace the new term with renewed inspiration for reading.
A Legacy of Learning
“On Mandela Day, we reflect on his words: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon to change the world,'” says Ambeswa Mgandela, Communications & Advocacy Officer at Funda Wande. “While many Mandela Day activities happen today, we believe his legacy should extend beyond a single day. As children return to school next week, we’re ensuring they’re welcomed back with the transformative power of reading.”
The timing is intentional – as learners settle back into their routines after the school holidays, Dr. Mhlophe’s storytelling will provide the perfect inspiration to kick-start the new term with a renewed love for reading.
Dr. Mhlophe,whose storytelling has enchanted generations of South Africans, will read to Grade R-3 learners in what promises to be the emotional and educational highlight of the day. Her session forms part of Funda Wande’s mission to ensure every child in South Africa can read for meaning by age 10.
Creating Lasting Impact
Beyond the storytelling magic, the activation will establish permanent reading corners in selected classrooms, equipped with age-appropriate books, comfortable mats, and storage shelves. These spaces will continue promoting literacy development long after Mandela Day.
“We’re not just creating a moment of inspiration – we’re building sustainable reading environments that will serve learners for years to come,” explains Mgandela.
