Defending champion Ons Jabeur has been forced to withdraw from this year’s Madrid Open due to the calf injury she picked up during her semifinal with Iga Swiatek at Stuttgart.
Jabeur had “minor” knee surgery in February but said she was almost fully recovered, only to suffer this knew injury in Stuttgart.
The former world No 2 will now take time to recover before deciding her next move. She could return next month for the Italian Open, but the priority will be to arrive in Paris fully fit for Roland-Garros, which begins on May 28.

Jabeur was placed in yesterday’s draw at Madrid as the No.4 seed. She will be replaced by a lucky loser.
She won the Charleston title in early April and carried a seven-match winning streak into her semifinal with Swiatek.
