Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the passing away of its long serving Communications Manager Alex “Goldfingers” Shakoane.
Fullview understands Shakoane was hospitalised after he suffered a stroke.
The club released the statement and it reads as follows:
Mamelodi Sundowns is deeply saddened to announce the untimely passing of its long serving Communications Manager and staunch supporter, Alex Shakoane.
Alex Shakoane, loved Mamelodi Sundowns immensely and was a loyal servant of football in Mamelodi, Tshwane and the whole of South Africa. He was involved in Sundowns from it’s formative years in the 1970s.
The Chairman of Mamelodi Sundowns, Tlhopie Motsepe said: “The Motsepe family, the Board, the Supporters and all the members of the Mamelodi Sundowns Family mourn and are deeply saddened by the passing of Alex” Goldfinger” Shakoane whom we all loved dearly. Bra Alex’s life was all about Mamelodi Sundowns and we will miss his unique contributions and larger than life personality.”
Our thoughts and prayers are with the Shakoane family, his friends and all Masandawana.
Alex Shakoane will forever live in the hearts and minds of all Masandawana.
Shakoane, a former policeman, served in the club in various capacities, with two spells as their communications officer.

Orlando Pirates,Kaizer Chiefs and the Premier Soccer League (PSL) issued the following statements regarding Goldfingers.
PIRATES STATEMENT: “Orlando Pirates is saddened by the passing of Alex “Goldfingers” Shakoane,” a club statement read.
“On behalf of the extended Orlando Pirates family, we convey our heartfelt and deepest sympathy to the Shakoane family. Rest In Peace.”
CHIEFS STATEMENT: “Kaizer Chiefs extends its sincere condolences to the Shakoane and Mamelodi Sundowns family on the passing of Alex Shakoane. He was a colourful, larger than life figure who contributed greatly to South African football and he will be sadly missed.
PSL STATEMENT: “The PSL is saddened by the passing of Alex Shakoane. We extend our deepest condolences to the Shakoane family, Masandawana and the football family at large,” a statement read.
Sundowns are expected to provide details regarding the memorial and funeral service in due course.
