The penultimate round of the 2022-23 DStv Premiership came to a close on Saturday afternoon, with answers to the two major remaining questions of the league no closer to being answered.
SuperSport United claimed a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs in a DStv Premiership encounter played at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg on Saturday afternoon.
With Mamelodi Sundowns yet again soaring to another title — their sixth in a row — their arch-rivals, Chiefs, Supersport and Pirates had to fight for the bridesmaids’ spot.
Amakhosi will end the season trophy-less — their eighth barren run in a row — and outside the top three as the rebuilding phase under coach Arthur Zwane proved to be fruitless.
Chiefs started slowly as they allowed Matsatsantsa to attack them through the wings and deliver crosses into the box – keeping Brandon Petersen busy between the sticks.
The Chiefs goalkeeper produced a fantastic save to deny Bradley Grobler who was looking to score with a sublime header in the 36th minute with the visitors’ defence exposed.
However, Petersen was beaten in the 40th minute when Ghampani Lungu netted with a first-time looped effort after a poor Petersen clearance and SuperSport were leading 1-0 at halftime.
Chiefs pushed for the equalising goal after the restart and Siyabonga Ngezana came close to scoring in the 63rd minute when his shot narrowly missed the target.
With 10 minutes left on the clock, Yusuf Maart tried his luck from a distance and he was denied by goalkeeper Ricardo Goss who ensured that the game ended in a 1-0 in favour of SuperSport United.
Meanwhile Orlando Pirates and Sekhukhune United shared the spoils in their latest DStv Premiership encounter, recording a 1-1 draw at the Orlando Stadium.
Elsewhere Lamontville Golden Arrows secured a 1-0 win over AmaZulu FC in Saturday afternoon’s DStv Premiership match at the Princess Magogo Stadium in Durban.
