The Community Safety Head of Department (HOD), Nontsikelelo Sisulu and Chief Financial Officer, Mduduzi Malope have been suspended with immediate effect.
This comes after a forensic investigation uncovered financial irregularities in the department.
Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi said the suspensions are a precautionary measure to ensure fair and unbiased investigations.
On Sunday, Lesufi released 39 forensic investigations reports, which have been finalised by the Provincial Forensic Audit Unit.
Lesufi said, reports will be released step by step after all legal issues are resolved, ensuring they are not made public too soon if doing so could harm enforcement or implementation of recommendations.
The government is aware that releasing certain details early might disrupt ongoing legal cases or make it harder to follow recommendations, including putting whistleblowers’ identities and safety at risk.
Lesufi stated his intervention was prompted by a need to safeguard the department’s integrity.
“The provincial government is committed to restoring public trust by upholding the highest standards of integrity.We maintain a zero-tolerance stance against corruption and misconduct. Through proactive and corrective measures, we will strengthen governance, ensure the ethical and responsible use of public funds, and safeguard the interests of Gauteng residents,” said Lesufi.
In addition, he said the acting Head of Department and acting Chief Financial Officer will be appointed to ensure continuity of service delivery.
With the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 2025 at Johannesburg’s NASREC Expo Centre, Lesufi expressed confidence in the province’s readiness despite the short timeframe.
South Africa assumes the G20 presidency from 1 December 2024 to 30 November 2025, with Johannesburg hosting the main event.
A R691 million budget has been allocated for preparations, emphasizing infrastructure upgrades along key routes, grass cutting, lighting repairs, and pothole fixes.
