Kaizer Chiefs announced the signing of Asanele Velebayi after the midfielder was declared a free agent following Cape Town Spurs’ relegation.
The PSL DRC officially declared Velebayi a free agent on Monday after Spurs lodged a complaint with the league arguing that they were entitled to a transfer fee.
Chiefs acted swiftly in announcing the player on Tuesday afternoon after he had verbally agreed to join the club before the verdict was delivered.
“Chiefs Welcome Velebayi to Naturena.
“We would like to announce the signing of Asanele Velebayi. The Cape Town-born winger has signed a long-term contract with the Club.”
Rising star Luke Baartman is also embroiled in a similar legal battle with Spurs and could soon be declared a free agent.
If the ruling goes in his favour, Baartman is widely expected to follow in Velebayi’s footsteps and be unveiled as a new Chiefs signing.
Velebayi becomes Chiefs’ sixth signing of the season following the arrivals of Nkanyiso Shinga, Ethan Chislett, Flavio Silva, Thabiso Monyane and Paseka Mako.
