At least five people died after a head-on-collision between a car and a truck on the N2 between Amatikulu and Dokodweni, Kwazulu-Natal (KZN) on Saturday morning.
Fullview learnt the truck slammed into the light motor vehicle and pushed it into the side of the road. The truck overturned and crushed the light motor into pieces.
Department of Transport in KZN says officials from the Road Traffic Inspectorate are investigating the cause of a deadly crash.
”The MEC will be getting more reports from the Road Traffic Inspectorate, and he has expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased,” said spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya.
Sibiya says the crash occurs just hours after a multi-disciplinary roadblock in Durban North where multiple people were arrested for several violations, including drunk driving.
“ The MEC has offered to ensure that we intensify the No-Nonsense, Zero Tolerance and Alufakwa approach throughout the province of KwaZulu Natal. To save lives and to ensure that there is visibility of the RTI and that we sustain the road safety campaign until the end of the year and beyond.”
Meanwhile the death toll of a car crash on the R101 in Limpopo, that claimed lives of awaiting trial prisoners, has risen to nine.
On Thursday, six detainees died while being transported from the Mokopane Police station to the Mookgophong Magistrate Court. A police officer who was escorting the inmates also died in the crash.
On Saturday, Limpopo Police spokesperson Hlulani Mashaba confirmed the latest deaths.
“Two more inmates who had been admitted in hospital following the collision between a police vehicle, and a truck have sadly succumbed to their injuries on Friday, bringing the total number of fatalities to nine, one police officer and eight inmates,”
“The remaining injured inmates are still receiving medical treatment.”
Mashaba said an investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of the accident that led to fatalities
