South Africa’s off-spinner Prenelan Subrayen has been reported with a suspect bowling action during the first One Day International (ODI) against Australia.
Subrayen made his ODI debut in South Africa’s 98-run win over Australia in Cairns on Tuesday, 19 August 2025.
“The match officials’ report specified concerns about the legality of Subrayen’s action,” the ICC said in a statement.
“The 31-year old Subrayen has 14 days to undergo an independent assessment of his bowling action at an ICC-accredited testing laboratory. He is allowed to bowl until the results of his tests are known.
According to International Cricket Council (ICC) regulations: “An illegal bowling action is where a player is throwing rather than bowling the ball. This is defined by the ICC as being where the player’s elbow extends by an amount of more than 15 degrees between their arm reaching the horizontal and the ball being released.”
After this test, it would be determined whether he would be allowed to continue playing at elite level or whether he would be suspended until he had modified his bowling action and undertaken another test successfully.
This is not the first time that the off-spinner has come under scrutiny.
Cricket South Africa deemed his bowling action illegal in 2012 after conducting two separate tests before he was cleared to bowl in 2013 after going through remedial work and his bowling action was re-tested.
Subrayen, 31, is a veteran on the domestic circuit, having taken over 400 wickets in the 302 professional matches he has played across all three formats.
