Christian Coleman won his third Diamond League 100m title with a razor-tight victory in Zurich on Thursday (28 August).
The top three were separated by only 0.02 seconds, with South Africa’s Akani Simbine claiming second (9.98) and Ackeem Blake of Jamaica third in 9.99.
Coleman’s victory means he now adds the 2025 Diamond League series title to the ones he won in 2018 and 2023, but it is unlikely he has won many races in his life that were as close as this.
The three-time world championship gold medallist is known for his blistering start, but it was his ability to maintain his pace to the line that enabled him to come home first after a photo finish.
Simbine, the 2018 Commonwealth Games 100m gold medallist, put in a stellar performance to place second, while Jamaica’s Blake just failed to retain the Diamond League title he won in 2024.
There was, however, bad news for South Africa’s sprint prodigy Bayanda Walaza, who pulled up injured on his way to the finish line and will now face a race to be fit in time for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, which are under three weeks away.
Meanwhile Noah Lyles beat Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo in the men’s 200m at the Diamond League Final in Zurich.
