Tanzanian giants Young Africans revived their CAF Champions League hopes with an emphatic 3-0 home victory over 10-man Medeama on Wednesday.
Pacome Zouzoua broke the deadlock for the hosts after 31 minutes before second half strikes from Bakari Mwamnyeto and Mudathiri Yahya sealed the win.
The result leaves Young Africans second in Group D on goal difference behind leaders Al Ahly heading into the final two rounds.
It was a very different story for bottom side Medeama, who saw Jonathan Sowah sent off late on to compound a miserable night after receiving his second yellow card of the match.
The heavy loss leaves the Ghanaian outfit on four points and facing a battle to progress into the knockout stage.
Young Africans coach Miguel Angel Gamondi hailed his team’s impressive performance insisting it has revived their campaign.
“It was one of the best games we have played this campaign. We analyzed our game and played real football in all aspects,” Gamondi said in the post match press conference.
“We have given our fans happiness and that’s what football is all about. I told the players to believe as we searched for a win today. I’m more than happy for the answers today.”
Meanwhile SuperSport United secured a crucial 2-1 win against Al Hilal Benghazi in a CAF Confederation Cup match marred by controversy at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.
Elsewhere in a closely contested match, Stade Malien from Mali’s Premier Division triumphed 1-0 against South Africa’s Sekhukhune United, keeping their hopes alive for advancement to the CAF Confederation Cup Quarterfinals.
