As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to evolve, its impact is being experienced in every sphere of our daily lives. From informing our choices on financial services, to guiding manufacturing processes to helping us write that carefully worded email its influence and reach cannot be overstated.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the skincare space, that is in a state of massive transformation as AI restructures how skincare products are developed and formulated – all tailored to meet consumers unique skin requirements. Skincare products are no longer following a ‘one size fits all’ approach, and instead AI is empowering beauty brands to create bespoke products that factor in an individual’s distinctive – and pre-existing – skin conditions, environmental influences, genetic makeup, and even how one person’s skin is likely to react to ingredients.
What lies behind the science?
What lies behind what can only be described as a revolution, is cutting-edge machine learning algorithms that process and analyse vast amounts of data about an individual’s skin health and unique characteristics. These systems maximise the use of technology to conduct detailed skin analyses, including reviewing factors such as texture, tone, pore size, fine lines, and potential areas of concern. So sophisticated is the technology is that is able to detect subtle variations in skin condition that may not be visible to the naked eye.
AI systems don’t merely examine surface-level skin characteristics, instead they incorporate multiple information sets, including environmental factors like humidity, UV exposure, and pollution levels in the user’s location. This ensures that skincare formulations are both personalised and optimised for a person’s living conditions and lifestyle factors that could affect the health of their complexion.
Personalisation is the name of the AI game
As AI becomes inevitably smarter, one of the most notable aspects of AI in skincare, is its ability to draw on historical data about product effectiveness. By using a myriad of data from customer feedback, clinical trials, and real-world usage, AI systems can identify patterns in how different skin types respond to various ingredients and formulations. This in turn creates more accurate predictions about which ingredients will work best for each individual.
As a case in point, when treating specific skin conditions such as scarring, AI may recognise that although vitamin E oil indicates positive outcomes for certain skin types, other ingredients may well be more effective for different genetic profiles or skin conditions. This kind of in-depth analysis makes for entirely personalised recommendations based on the data and no longer on broad assumptions.
Safety first
Even though AI is making enormous strides in personalising skincare, increasing product efficacy, safety still comes first in skincare development. AI systems are specifically programmed to work within stringent safety protocols and regulatory frameworks. With this in mind, technology can quickly identify potential safety concerns or side-effects on an individual’s skin type, known sensitivities, and other health conditions.
However, the human touch will never fully be negated. Typically, those organisations currently making use of AI in the skincare realm, most often rely on dermatologists and cosmetic scientists to review and validate AI-generated formulations. This hybrid approach ensures best outcome for both the company and consumers.
What does the future look like?
Given that AI technology is still relatively new, it is difficult to predict with any degree of accuracy what the future of AI in skincare looks like.
However, pundits are suggesting the following advances may be in reach sooner than we think:
- Integration with wearable devices to track additional health metrics that might impact skin condition
- Enhanced prediction models for long-term skin health outcomes
- Improved formulation methodologies that create products with greater stability and efficacy.
Whatever way you look at it, face value just got a whole new meaning.
