The SA Police Services (SAPS) confirmed the strong police presence at the controversial businessman Brown Mogotsi’s premises in Seweding village in Mafikeng as part of an ongoing investigation.
SAPS National Spokersperson Athlenda Mathe says “This visit is part of an ongoing investigation that has already been discussed before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry and Parliament Adhoc Committee.”
Mogotsi’s name featured prominently at the commission which showed how he used his ties to the African National Congress (ANC) to get money from criminals for his benefit.
His connections to alleged criminal Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala have raised concerns about potential corruption and undue influence, and that they shared classified SAPS documents.
He was also found to have a letter penned by suspended Senzo Mchunu ordering the Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) disbandment on December 31, 2024.
In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Mogotsi said he was surprised by the visit, which he said he understood to be a search and seizure operation.
He said he was not in North West but in Johannesburg. He had asked the police officers who were at his business premises to meet him in Johannesburg.
“They said they’ll be here around 10 pm. I will not meet them at night, would rather hand myself over at Alexandra police station tomorrow morning because I don’t trust those ones, as some of them are wearing balaclavas,” he said.
Meanwhile Mchunu told Adhoc Committee, “I never spoke to Brown Mogotsi in this period, particularly about the PKTT disbandment.”
“How he got to know [about the disbandment] and how he got access to the letter is better explained by him, and that will be the only time I get to know how that happened.”
