South African male runner Tete Dijana arrived first at the Moses Mabhida Stadium to claim the 2022 Comrades Marathon title in an incredible time of 5 hours 30 minutes and 35seconds.
Dijana’s Nedbank running club team member, Edward Mothibi, who attempted defending his 2019 Comrades title, came in second in 5:33:46 after the two dominated the marathon following the halfway point and Dan Moselakwe took third position in 5:36:25.
The former security guard earned R260 000 in prize money for his victory and an additional R100 000 as the first South African home.
The 95th annual marathon was downhill from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.
Meanwhile Russia’s Alexandra Morozova has secured her winning streak taking first place in the women’s Comrades Marathon.
Dominika Stelmach from Poland came in second place.
Morozova, twice previously a the runner-up at this race, has previously not received prize money due to a global ban on Russian athletes, but it seemed like she was competing as an individual ‘international’ athlete this weekend and the issue was unlikely to be a concern again.
She’ll be back in court in November to establish whether she’s entitled to any prize money.
