Nigerian President Bola Tinubu postponed a trip abroad to deal with security issues after a spate of attacks including the abduction of dozens of schoolgirls, the killing of a military general, and the kidnapping of churchgoers.
Tinubu was scheduled to leave the Nigerian capital Abuja on Wednesday to attend the Group of 20 summit taking place in Johannesburg this weekend, before traveling to Angola for an African Union-European Union heads-of-state meeting next week.
The trip has been delayed as the president “awaits further security briefings” on the seizure of the schoolgirls and churchgoers, the presidency said in a statement on Wednesday.
Nigeria faces multiple security threats, with Islamist militants ramping up an insurgency in the north of the country, and mass abductions becoming more commonplace.
Nigeria’s handling of the security situation has drawn criticism from US President Donald Trump, who falsely claimed earlier this month that Christians are being systematically killed in the West African nation.
