Former Free State MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Butana Komphela has died,He was 65.
Komphela died on Monday afternoon.
Family spokesperson Mangaliso Alexander Xaba said Khompela had been admitted to hospital more than a month ago for Covid-19 related treatment.
“The family are awaiting the postmortem results to determine the cause of death,” he said.
He said the family was in mourning.
“It is indeed difficult for the family. To lose the head of a family is not an easy thing for anyone.”
In November,Khompela was sentenced to three years but his sentence was suspended after he was found guilty for being responsible for an accident that claimed the life of Samuel Manyova (50).
He was involved in an accident whilst driving from the direction of Theunissen to Bloemfontein. His BMW collided with a Volkswagen Polo that was driving in the opposite direction with five occupants. As a result, Manyova, who was one of the passengers, died at the scene.
His sentence was wholly suspended for a period of five years on the condition that he is not again found guilty of a similar offence during the period of suspension.
Komphela served as MEC for Police, Roads and Transport, Social Development as well as MEC for Health in the province.
