A family of 5 have been killed in a disastrous petrol tanker collision just outside Alberton, in the south of Johannesburg.

The tanker collided with a vehicle that was transporting a family on Wednesday night.

All five relatives died on the scene when their vehicle caught fire.

Emergency services worked through the night to clean the petrol spillage on the road.

Ekurhuleni emergency services’ William Ntladi said: “The scene has been handed over to the law enforcement unit for the removal of the bodies to an appropriate facility and to conduct an investigation as to what actually caused the crash.”

The accident meant Swartkoppies and Kliprivier roads may be closed for most of Thursday morning.

Motorists are urged to use alternative routes to avoid delays.

Over 50 firefighters and emergency personnel were on scene to control the fire. Six firetrucks from Ekurhuleni and five from Johannesburg were deployed.
