Multiple bodies have been found on the N1 near Maraisburg Road in Gauteng, with initial reports claiming they are murdered illegal miners.
At least six bodies were found scattered along the N1 highway near Maraisburg.
The gruesome discovery was made on Wednesday morning.
Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo believed what happened could have been due to ongoing clashes between rival illegal miners groups.
Masondo also said the clashes had led to the discovery of three bodies in the same area on Monday.
Police are on the scene searching for more victims and the motive for the murders is not yet known.
