Free State police have rearrested a prisoner who escaped while in hospital for treatment.
The man, who is serving a sentence for armed robbery in Kimberley, had been taken for medical treatment at a hospital in Bloemfontein on Tuesday.
While in hospital, Chris Potgieter, 47, managed to escape. He was arrested on Thursday in Koffiefontein attempting to hitchhike, said police spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli.
“The suspect was handed over to Mangaung police and will be taken back to Kimberley… where he will serve the remainder of his sentence.
Circumstances that led to his escape are part of ongoing investigations,” said Kareli.
The spokesperson for the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), Singabakho Nxumalo, says an investigation has thus been instituted to ascertain what happened and how Potgieter escaped on the said day.
