The National Consumer Commission (NCC) has confirmed a recall of NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula (0–12 months) after tests identified a possible health risk linked to the product.
The affected product batch number is 51660742F3 which was distributed across South Africa and exported to neighbouring countries, including Namibia and Eswatini.
Retailers and distributors have been instructed to remove the item from sale and advise customers accordingly.
The NCC emphasised that the recall is a precautionary measure and that infant formula safety remains a top priority.
It said this product is intended for the dietary management of infants at risk of developing cow’s milk protein allergy.
“The affected product is NAN Special Pro HA 800g with batch number 51660742F3. The product was produced in June 2025 through all major retailers and distributors across South Africa, said NCC spokesperson, Phetho Ntaba.
Ntaba said the product recall follows the identification of a potential presence of Cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, which constitutes a food safety concern.
The NAN infant formula has a lifespan of approximately eighteen months.
Consumers in possession of the affected NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula 800g are urged to return the product to the point of purchase for a full refund.
Ntaba said the NCC would continue to monitor the matter and engage with the supplier to ensure ongoing compliance with the food safety requirements.
This local action comes amid a wider global recall initiated by Swiss food giant Nestlé, which has pulled multiple batches of its SMA, BEBA, NAN and other infant formula products from markets in Europe and beyond after internal testing flagged the same cereulide toxin risk.
