Kaizer Chiefs and Cape Town City will both be aiming to build momentum in the DStv Premiership when they meet at FNB Stadium on Wednesday 21 April 2021.
Kick-off is at 5pm.
Chiefs extended their unbeaten run in the league to five matches when they were held 1-1 at Baroka FC on April 15, with Lebogang Manyama scoring the opening goal.
The result sees the Amakhosi placed down in ninth on 25 points and getting back into the top eight and working their way toward a respectable finish is the immediate priority for coach Gavin Hunt and his charges.
“It’s a point and we’re moving forward and it’s another game unbeaten and the players have done well – in fact they’ve been great,” said Hunt, who added that his team have been unlucky to be denied several strong penalty appeals in recent games.
“Two games or three games in a row now we have been getting in those situations [of being denied penalty decisions] and it’s been blatant. It’s so disappointing that‚ because that gives you a lot of the momentum [if you get those decisions].”
Meanwhile, City come into the game on the back of a 3-0 home win over SuperSport United on April 10 – courtesy of goals from Fagrie Lakay, Mpho Makola and Tashreeq Morris – which broke an eight game victory winless run.
The Citizens are comfortably placed in seventh but will want to begin a strong run to the end of the league season.
“Looking forward, we now have a big task ahead to face Chiefs away but it’s also good that we have some time to prepare for that game. From then we basically have a match every few days, so this is a big opportunity for us to get back on track, “said City coach Jan Olde Riekerink.
“In the past we conceded a lot of goals, then we went through a phase where we didn’t score many goals. Now we finally got the balance right.”
In head-to-head stats, City and Chiefs have met in nine league matches since 2016/17. The Amakhosi have claimed six wins compared to two for the Citizens, while one game has been drawn. The Soweto side has recorded two wins, one draw and one defeat from their four matches as hosts in the rivalry.
Chiefs hold a superior advantage in terms of head-to-clashes between the two rivals, while City have also not beaten Chiefs in their last eight encounters across all competitions since 2017.
