Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has confirmed four people were injured after a wall collapsed, caused by a transformer fire in New Doornfontein in Johannesburg.
EMS responded to the incident about 5:55 am on Monday at the intersection of Lower Railway Road and Staib Street.
The front of the building collapsed after a fire broke out, followed by a minor explosion in a section of the structure housing an electrical box.
The blaze has since been extinguished, while emergency teams remain on site assessing the building.
Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi says emergency services are on scene to ensure that nobody is still in the building, but indicates that information received upon arrival at the scene revealed that everyone inside had accounted for.
There is no indication that someone could be trapped. But we want to allay fears around the incident by making sure that we remove the rubble.
Mulaudzi says circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire will be investigated this includes ensuring that there are no gas leaks around the building.
The collapse has reignited concerns over building safety in Johannesburg, where rapid construction often outpaces oversight.
