Orlando Pirates consolidated their lead at the top of the Betway Premiership with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Polokwane City at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday night.
Relebohile Mofokeng broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute but Polokwane equalised four minutes from time through Bonginkosi Dlamini.
That nearly spoiled the party but in stoppage time, Pirates regained their advantage. Against the run of play, Deon Hotto crossed in a delicious ball and Patrick Maswanganyi slotted home on the volley for 2-1.
With Mamelodi Sundowns also winning 2-1 against Golden Arrows, Pirates remained at the top of the table on goal difference with both sides on 44 points from 19 games.
Meanwhile Durban City and Sekhukhune United cancelled each other out in a 1-1 draw at the Chatsworth Stadium on Wednesday night.
Elsewhere AmaZulu FC moved up to fifth place despite a 0-0 draw at home to bottom-of-the-log Magesi FC at the Princess Magogo Stadium, while Marumo Gallants secured the most surprising result of the night, defeating Chippa United 3-1 at the Buffalo City Stadium.
Tuesday’s results saw Kaizer Chiefs suffer a fourth successive defeat across all competitions, as they slumped to a 1-0 reverse away to Richards Bay; Siwelele FC and Stellenbosch FC played out a goalless stalemate in Bloemfontein; and TS Galaxy were hit with a fifth straight league loss, going down 2-1 at home to Orbit College.
