Former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena is receiving consular assistance from the South African mission in Algeria after being arrested for allegedly violating the country’s currency regulations.

His arrest comes after his amicable departure from MC Alger was announced.

Mokwena’s exit was unexpected, as he had guided the team to the top of the league table, holding a five-point lead with four games in hand.

Fullview learnt that Mokwena was stopped by officials at Houari Boumediene Airport in Algiers while in possession of a large sum of money, which is against Algerian regulations.

The South African embassy in Algeria has confirmed it is aware of the situation surrounding Mokwena and is providing support.

“The embassy in Algiers can confirm that it was notified of the arrest of Mr Rulani Mokwena [on Sunday], who is alleged to have violated Algeria’s foreign currency regulation(s),” the embassy stated.

“The mission is in touch with Mokwena and is providing consular assistance to him.”

Mokwena is believed to have agreed a deal with Libyan giants Al-Ittihad, where he’ll be reunited with his former player Thembinkosi Lorch.
