Inter Miami will honor Argentina great Lionel Messi by naming a part of the club’s new stadium after him, unveiling a section as the “Leo Messi Stand.”
Messi, 38, is widely regarded as one of the greatest players ever, signed for the MLS club in 2023 after a trophy-laden career in Europe with Barcelona and Paris St-Germain (PSG).
He has gone on to become the record goalscorer with 82 and record assist provider with 53 for the Florida club, who have taken the unusual step of honouring an active player in this fashion at their 26,700 capacity Nu Stadium.
Miami’s first game at the Nu Stadium will be on April 4 against Austin FC and the club announced on Friday this will also be the official unveiling of the “Leo Messi Stand”.
The MLS club said the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will become a “rare and unique case” in world sport by having a stand at his home stadium named after him while still an active player.
“Recognising someone is not always about closing a chapter. Sometimes it is about realising you are witnessing something unique.”
Messi’s arrival at the club co-owned by former England captain David Beckham has raised the profile of the league and Inter Miami’s status, as well as delivering success in the form of the Leagues Cup, Supporters’ Shield and MLS Cup.
