Seven people have died and 2 sustained serious injuries in a car accident on the N1 near Modimolle in Limpopo.
The Transport Department said a trailer detached from a bakkie and collied with several vehicles on Friday night.
It is reported that the two Sedans were heading north and Bakkie heading south and trailer on the bakkie broke and hit the vehicles.
The department’s spokesperson Mike Maringa said MEC Mavhungu Lerule-Ramakhanya has described the crash as shocking.
“Limpopo Transport and Community Safety MEC Mavhungu-Lerule Ramakhanya has sent messages of condolences to the families of the people who were killed in a multiple-vehicle crash on the N1 last night.”
He added: “The MEC is pleading with motorists to check the condition of their vehicles and also to drive within the prescribed speed limits.”
In a separate incident a 12-year-old girl has sustained serious injuries in a head-on collision on the N3 near the M7 on Friday afternoon. Rescue Care Paramedics along with other ambulance services arrived on the scene to find that two vehicles collided in a head-on format. A twelve-year-old girl as well as an adult female sustained serious injuries in the crash and required advanced life support care in order to be stabilized.
Both patients were subsequently transported to nearby hospitals for the further care that they would require. A third patient sustained only minor injuries during the collision and did not require hospitalization.
The cause of the collision is currently not known but the relevant authorities were on the scene and will be investigating.
