The Thabo Mbeki Foundation (TMF) and the University of South Africa (Unisa) announced that the 16th Thabo Mbeki Africa Day activities will take place in Cape Town, South Africa, from 20 to 25 May 2026.
The 2026 programme will unfold as a week-long Africa Day platform designed to bring together reflection, dialogue, culture, and public engagement across a range of institutional and civic spaces.
Held under the theme Rebuilding African Unity in an Age of Fragmentation: Sovereignty, Solidarity, and the Renewal of Institutions, the 2026 edition will invite participants to reflect on the practical requirements of African unity in a time marked by geopolitical uncertainty, institutional strain, economic fragmentation, and renewed questions about sovereignty, solidarity, and the public purpose of institutions.
The Cape Town programme marks an important moment in the evolution of the Thabo Mbeki Africa Day platform. It will bring Africa Day into conversation with business, academia, Parliament, culture, media, diplomacy, and youth engagement, allowing the week to function not simply as a commemorative event, but as a serious public platform for continental thought and action.
