Protests are continuing in Harrismith in the Free State as residents say that unrest will continue until President Cyril Ramaphosa intervene.
Residents of Intabazwe have been hurling rocks and petrol bombs at the N3 highway.
According to the residents’ leader, Neo Motaung, no learning and teaching will resume if their demands are not met.
Motaung further added that they respect Covid-19 regulations, but that they have nothing other to do than to stage a protest in order to get their concerns heard.”Taking our concerns to the streets is the only option that we have to be taken seriously”, he said.
They want Harrismith to be removed from Maluti-A-Phofung as they believe that service delivery is only rendered to two towns falling under this municipality, which are Qwaqwa and Kestel.
Police are monitoring the situation.
Police spokesperson, Motantsi Makhele, confirmed that at least six people have been arrested for public violence.
N3 was closed for a while for the safety of motorists and later the law enforcement managed to disperse the protestors and the road was opened again.
Makhele warned motorists to be vigilant when approaching Harrismith.
