The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) arrested 11 Tshwane Metro Police Department officers on Friday over allegations of assault.
The officers are accused of assaulting three men who were at the Tshwane impound centre to collect their cars on 2 October.
This follows an investigation by the TMPD internal affairs unit that deals with conduct of members.
“The matter was given full attention and the TMPD fully cooperated with the independent Police investigative directorate (IPID). Further investigations led to the arrest of eleven TMPD members who are allegedly involved in the assault of the three males. The Tshwane Metro Police Department condemns such actions from its members, internal disciplinary processes will continue amid with these arrests,” said the TMPD in a statement.
“The officers have been arrested and will appear [in court] on Monday,” IPID spokesperson Grace Langa said.
She added they would spend the rest of the weekend in the cells at the Pretoria Central police station.
“We arrested nine males and two females.”
The officers are between the ages of 29 and 45.
IPID said it struggled to track the officers down, adding different strategies were employed to find them.
