A lightning strike caused the Lower Sabie filling station in the Kruger National Park (KNP) to catch alight on the evening of November 13. The filling station is closed.
Visitors to the park have been warned to fill up if they are travelling in the area.
“The Lower Sabie was struck by lightning which resulted in the facility catching fire,” says Sanparks spokesperson, Isaac Phaahla.
“Firefighting teams from Lower Sabie, Skukuza, and Working on Fire were quickly on the scene and managed to bring the fire under control.
No injuries were reported, but the facility was completely gutted.
“Tourists and visitors are advised to have enough fuel from either Crocodile Bridge or Skukuza because the Lower Sabie filling station won’t be operational.”
A week ago, the park’s Tamboti camp and Kingfisher ranger post had to be evacuated when a fire broke out. But guests returned to their camp sites after the blaze was contained.
