The man accused of killing seven of his family members on Christmas day has appeared in the Malamulele Magistrates Court.
However, the case was postponed to 5 January 2022, in order for the accused to get a legal representative and for further investigations.
Azwidohwi Enoch Ndou,who faces seven counts of murder, is accused of killing his relatives at Jimmy Jones Village in the Malamulele area, in Limpopo.
The 52-year-old nurse handed himself over to the police in Thohoyandou, after allegedly shooting four children and three adults, including a heavily pregnant woman.
“It is alleged that Ndou went on a killing spree on Saturday morning as the family members were fighting for a stand that belongs to their father,” said the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA’s) Limpopo spokesperson Mashudu Malabi Dzhangi.
The Ndou family has revealed the suspect wanted to be in charge of the family home.
“He wanted to control the family home even though he was not currently staying there and there were people who were staying there. But he wanted to control the family home, and he wanted to control who would come to the family home and who was not allowed in the family home,” said family spokesperson Thendo Malaudzi.
The police said the seven victims were identified as follows:
1. Mpho Donald Ndou, 33.
2. Ndivhuwo Douglas Ndou, 33.
3. Portia Mabasa, 37 who was identified as Ndivhuwo’s wife.
4. Rendani Winnus Ndou, a 12-year-old boy.
5. Wanga Ndou, the 1-year-old daughter of Ndivhuwo.
6. Ronewa Ndou, a 4-year-old boy.
7. Dakalo Makondo Ndou, an 8-year-old girl who died on her way to the hospital.
Statistics released by Police Minister Bheki Cele last month showed that the rate of murders in South Africa increased by 20,7% in the three-month period between July and September compared to last year, with an overall increase of 1 056 cases.
A total of 6 163 people were killed in total, Cele said while announcing the crime statistics for the second quarter of 2021.
