The road to Betway SA20 Season 5 is already producing its share of blockbuster moves.
Australia’s Mitchell Marsh, England stars Joe Root, Sam Curran and Phil Salt headline a raft of international arrivals as all six franchises unveiled their retained and pre signed squads on Wednesday. Yet while the league has once again attracted some of world cricket’s biggest names, several familiar faces have quietly moved on, setting the stage for an intriguing player auction on 7 October.
Only 19 squad positions remain across the competition, underlining the confidence franchises have in the core groups that have helped establish SA20 as one of the premier T20 leagues in world cricket.
The biggest coup belongs to three time champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape, who secured Australian white ball captain Mitchell Marsh for his first appearance in the tournament. The powerful all rounder joins reigning Betway SA20 Player of the Season Quinton de Kock, captain Tristan Stubbs and Matthew Breetzke in what already looks one of the strongest batting line ups in the competition.
Marsh is expected to make his debut when the defending champions open their title defence against Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park on 17 January.
Pretoria Capitals have also strengthened considerably, welcoming back one of the league’s most explosive batters in Phil Salt. The England wicketkeeper batter starred during the first two SA20 seasons before moving elsewhere, and now returns alongside Australian opener Matthew Short. With Dewald Brevis, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford and Proteas fast bowler Lungi Ngidi already in the squad, the Capitals appear determined to return to title contention.
Paarl Royals have opted for continuity, completing their full squad before the auction. England Test captain Joe Root returns to Boland Park for a second spell after leaving a lasting impression during Season 3, while David Miller, Ottneil Baartman and rising Proteas star Lhuan dre Pretorius remain key members of the Royals setup.
Durban’s Super Giants have added another proven match winner in England all rounder Sam Curran. The left hander reunites with England teammate Jos Buttler in Durban, joining a formidable squad featuring Proteas captain Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen and West Indies legend Sunil Narine.
MI Cape Town have secured one of the most sought after players in world franchise cricket, signing England all rounder Will Jacks after three successful seasons with Pretoria Capitals. Jacks joins a powerful squad that already boasts Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickelton and Nicholas Pooran.
Meanwhile, Joburg Super Kings have strengthened their overseas contingent with West Indies all rounder Jason Holder, who links up with compatriot Akeal Hosein, James Vince and Donovan Ferreira at the Wanderers.
The retention announcements also confirmed the end of several high profile partnerships.
Joburg Super Kings have parted ways with long time captain Faf du Plessis after four seasons, leaving one of the competition’s founding franchises searching for a new leader. Proteas all rounder Wiaan Mulder and fast bowler Nandre Burger have also been released into the auction pool.
MI Cape Town have undergone one of the biggest overhauls, moving on from Proteas batter Rassie van der Dussen, veteran West Indies all rounder Kieron Pollard and New Zealand pace spearhead Trent Boult.
Defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape have also elected not to retain England wicketkeeper batter Jonny Bairstow, opening the door for Marsh’s arrival.
While Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have already completed their 19 player squads, four franchises still have business to do.
Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town will be among the busiest teams at the 7 October auction, each looking to fill six remaining places. Pretoria Capitals have five vacancies, while Sunrisers Eastern Cape require just two more players.
Every franchise has already filled its overseas player allocation ahead of the auction, although Joburg Super Kings still retain the option of signing a wildcard player.
SA20 League Commissioner Graeme Smith believes the balance between international quality and local talent continues to strengthen the tournament.
“Season 5 is shaping up to be our strongest yet. Bringing in a player of Mitchell Marsh’s calibre alongside the class of Joe Root, Sam Curran and Phil Salt shows the growing pull of our league on the global stage. What excites me most is seeing that quality sit alongside the prime of South Africa’s international and domestic stars.”
Smith added that the limited auction spots should ensure another fiercely contested season. “The franchises head into the Auction with the majority of their squads already locked in, which speaks volumes about the stability and consistency we have built. This sets us up for a highly competitive Season 5.”
Season 5 gets underway on 17 January 2027, when defending champions Sunrisers Eastern Cape host Pretoria Capitals in Gqeberha, before culminating with the final at Newlands on 21 February.
With Marsh making his SA20 debut, Root returning to Paarl, Salt back in Centurion and Curran switching to Durban, the league’s fifth season is already shaping up as one of its strongest. The auction may have only 19 places left to fill, but there is still plenty of intrigue before the first ball is bowled.
