The African National Congress (ANC) is mourning the sad passing of Gauteng Provincial Task Team (PTT) spokesperson Mzikayifane ‘Mzi’ Khumalo.
Fullview learnt that Khumalo collapsed at his home in Willowbrook Estate, Ruimsig, West of Johannesburg.
The ANC acting national spokesperson Nonceba Mhlauli, said Khumalo (54) died in hospital, where he was rushed for emergency medical care after collapsing at his home in the early hours of Monday morning.
Mhlauli described Khumalo as a committed member who served the party and the public by articulating its policies, decisions and programmes with discipline.
“Throughout these responsibilities, Comrade Mzi remained closely connected to the communities from which he emerged. His political life reflected a sustained commitment to the ANC and to the institutions of democratic local and provincial government,” she said.
Khumalo had been a member of the Gauteng Legislature since 2019 and served as an ANC Gauteng spokesperson.
The ANC has extended its condolences to Khumalo’s family, friends and comrades.
Khumalo was the mayor of Randfontein Local Municipality between 2015 and 2016 before it was renamed to Rand West City Local Municipality where he continued to serve in the role until 2019.
He was subsequently appointed chief whip of the ANC caucus in the provincial legislature, a position he held until October 2022.
Khumalo then joined the Gauteng provincial government as MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, eGovernment and Research and Development. He remained in the provincial executive until the 2024 provincial election, after which he was not reappointed to the executive council.
