These numbers tell a story that extends far beyond the football played on the pitch. They reveal the scale of the technology ecosystem behind the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a connected network of enterprise AI, edge computing and mission-critical data centre infrastructure that functioned as the digital nervous system for the largest sporting event in history.

Sixteen years after South Africa hosted the landmark 2010 tournament, technology was no longer simply being introduced to help referees see the game more clearly. It was working across the football ecosystem to help officials make decisions, coaches understand matches, broadcasters tell stories and fans experience the game from entirely new perspectives.

Referee View Reduces Jitter by Up to 60%

For South African viewers, that technological journey began with the opening match. As Bafana Bafana took to the pitch in the opening fixture, more than 50 partners and customers were brought closer to the action, giving them the opportunity to witness the national team in action while experiencing how the technology was helping shape the tournament.

When Mexico scored the tournament’s first goal, audiences viewed it through Referee View. Powered by AI, advanced stabilisation technology reduced visual shake from the official’s movement by up to 60%, transforming body-camera footage into smooth, broadcast-quality video. The result was a feed with up to 60% jitter reduction and up to 70% smoother video trajectory, with no degradation in video sharpness.

It was a remarkable evolution from the days when viewers watched from the sidelines and wondered whether a referee had seen the same thing they had. 84% of surveyed fans felt this close-to-action camera perspective made them feel as though they were on the pitch.

From disputed goals to football’s data-driven decisions

AI-enabled 3D player avatars supported Semi-Automated Offside Technology, giving officials additional information while helping viewers understand decisions more clearly. Reflecting on famous historical incidents such as Frank Lampard’s disallowed goal in 2010, the evolution of real-time spatial data shows how far the sport has come.

Precise digital models were created for all 1,248 players competing at the tournament, using advanced AI processing and individual player dimensions. The technology helped produce clearer 3D visualisations for tight offside decisions, shifting the conversation from simply asking whether a referee got a decision right to understanding the evidence behind it.

This is precisely the tension technology has always faced in football. Does it make the game fairer, or does it take away some of the emotion?

The answer may be that it does neither entirely. Instead, it changes the nature of the debate. Fans can still disagree with a decision, but increasingly, the conversation moves from “Did the referee see it correctly?” to “Do we agree with the interpretation of the evidence?”

Coaches read the pitch, players anticipate movement and analysts look for patterns. But modern football produces more information than any human team can process alone.

That is where FIFA AI Pro represented a significant shift. Built with AI Factory and enterprise AI capabilities, the platform gave all 48 teams access to tournament data, drawing on millions of data points and more than 2,000 performance metrics.

Coaches and analysts did not need to be data scientists. Using natural language, technical teams could query official football data and match footage and receive insights through reports, graphs, video clips and immersive 3D match recreations. The platform was used in 16 languages by more than 300 users, making advanced football intelligence accessible across the tournament.

For coaches and analysts, the value is not simply knowing what happened but understanding why.

The South African relevance is clear. The same principles are increasingly relevant beyond sport. AI systems need clean data, secure infrastructure, low-latency processing and people who can translate outputs into decisions. 25,000 Devices, 600 FIFA Sites: The Invisible Infrastructure Behind the Spectacle

Supporting this unprecedented tournament required a colossal technological backbone. More than 25,000 devices supported operations across 600 FIFA sites, while the technology ecosystem spanned data centre infrastructure, edge computing and enterprise AI.

Central to the broadcast operation was the International Broadcast Centre, where Lenovo infrastructure supported live video data and AI-driven broadcast solutions. Edge computing moved processing closer to where data was generated, helping enable near-real-time IPTV delivery with average latency of just six seconds to more than 1,000 screens across FIFA venues.

The Intelligent Command Centre brought data from more than 40 FIFA functional areas into a shared operational environment. AI-generated daily summaries helped officials interpret what was happening across the tournament footprint, identify emerging trends and respond to issues more quickly.

The technology extended further through digital twins and Smart Wayfinding, helping operators understand physical environments and giving fans smarter ways to navigate cities, venues and fan zones.

Where technology takes the beautiful game next

The 2026 World Cup’s technological story offers value greater than officiating. For South Africa, the opportunity is to ask what elements of this technology can be adapted to our own sporting ecosystem. Could AI give more young players access to sophisticated performance analysis? Could data help identify talent in communities that traditional scouting systems overlook? Could digital twins help local stadiums manage operations, security and crowd movement?

The future of football will not only be played on the pitch. It will be built in the data, powered by computing infrastructure and brought to life by technology connecting it all.
