Orlando Pirates secured a 1-0 win over Sekhukhune United in the first-leg of the MTN8 semi-finals at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Limpopo on Saturday afternoon.
Deon Hotto came close from a set-piece, forcing Melusi Buthelezi into action, while Ngoanamello Rammala looked to hit back at the other end but dragged his effort wide, leaving Sipho Chaine largely untested.
Just before the interval, Hotto finally broke the deadlock in the 44th minute, unleashing a fierce strike that left Buthelezi with too much power to deal with as Pirates took a 1-0 lead into the break.
The second half promised more attacking intent, but neither side could add to the scoreline as the Soweto giants held on for a narrow victory and secured the advantage heading into the second leg.
Pirates will now look to secure their lead when they host Babina Noko at Orlando Amstel Arena next weekend, making them firmly on course for a record-extending fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
