A multidisciplinary law enforcement team seized approximately 250kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of more than R200 million, at OR Tambo International Airport on Sunday, 25 October 2026.
The drugs, comprising 216 blocks of cocaine concealed in five luggage bags, were intercepted during a joint operation involving the SAPS, SARS Customs and Border Management Authority (BMA).

SA Police Services (SAPS) National Police Spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says “We can confirm that we have seized 216 blocks of cocaine. We already confirmed that they are cocaine. We had our forensic science laboratory experts who were on the scene and already tested what was in the wrapped packages, and they confirmed it tested positive for cocaine. It is worth an estimated value of more than R200 million.”
Mathe said, an investigation is underway.
She said SAPS remained committed to working with SARS Customs, the BMA and other stakeholders to strengthen border security and disrupt organised criminal networks.
SAPS National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola commended the team for its vigilance and professionalism.
“The significant seizure is a testament to the effectiveness of coordinated law enforcement efforts and the commitment of frontline officers to disrupting drug trafficking networks that seek to use South Africa’s ports of entry to move illicit substances,” Masemola said.
The major bust comes just a day after police in Rowallan Park, Gqeberha, Eastern Cape seized drugs worth an estimated R9.7 million during an intelligence driven operation.
