The Council for Geoscience confirmed that an earthquake occurred on Saturday afternoon around 14:30 in parts of Kwazulu/Natal this afternoon.
The residents of Richards Bay, eShowe, Nkandla, Melmoth, Empangeni, Mtunzini, Dumisani Makhaye, eSikhaleni, as well as Stanger, uMhlanga and Durban felt the shaking in varying degrees of severity.
The earthquake registered 3.9 on the local magnitude scale as recorded by the South African National Seismograph Network.
Spokesperson for Geoscience Mahlatse Mononela said the epicentre was located roughly 100 km northeast of Pietermaritzburg near the Tugela River.
It is unclear what caused the earthquake.
This comes after the South African Weather Services (SAWS) issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in the Midlands and western parts of the province over the weekend.
