Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Cassius Mailula is officially leaving the Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club after his loan stint at the club came to an end.
Wydad AC left the FIFA Club World Cup tournament without a win after going down 2-1 to Al Ain in their last Group G match at Audi Field in Washington, D.C., on Thursday.
Mailula scored the opener, but Wydad capitulated later to concede the defeat that leaves them winless as they exit the competition at the preliminary stage.
Mailula was loaned to Wydad from Major League Soccer side Toronto FC, the club he signed for in July 2023.
Mailula released a statement on Monday confirming his departure from Wydad.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write this message, as I want to let you all know that I will not be continuing with the team for the upcoming season,” Mailula wrote on his Instagram page.
“My time with Wydad has been an incredibly special and rewarding experience, and I will forever be grateful for it. I would like to express my deepest gratitude to each and every one of you.
“From the security staff to the technical team, to my teammates-your kindness and support has meant the world to me. You all hold a very special place in my heart.
Mailula made 36 appearances for Wydad, scoring six goals and setting up seven more.
He will now return to his parent club, Toronto FC. It remains to be seen whether the MLS side will integrate him into their squad or opt to loan him out again.
