Five people have died and 48 others were injured after the bus they were travelling in overturned on the N2 near Swellendam in the Western Cape on Friday.
According to a statement by the Western Cape government, at least five people were killed and 48 passengers were injured in the crash after the driver reportedly lost control of the bus.
Western Cape Premier Alan Winde said, “I would like to send my most sincere condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. For now, we are focused on a coordinated response to give all victims the best possible care and ensure safety at the scene.”
MEC for Mobility in the province, Ricardo Mackenzie also expressed his condolences and said, “This incident is a chilling reminder to everyone that we need to be extra vigilant on our roads this long weekend.”
The MEC of Health and Wellness, Dr Nomafrench Mbombo said the critically injured patients had been airlifted to Groote Schuur, Tygerberg and George hospitals. She said emergency services also referred some to Worcester Regional Hospital. Some received treatment from the scene, others at the local clinic and some at Swellendam Hospital.
Mbombo said Eskom has exempted Swellendam Hospital from the load-shedding schedule.
“This will greatly assist the facility in ensuring round-the-clock, lifesaving services,” she said.
In light of this terrible accident, many have called for increased investments in road infrastructure and safety measures. These efforts could include enhancing road conditions, investing in better public transport, and raising awareness campaigns around road safety.
