The University of Cape Town (UCT) on Friday evening confirmed that vice-chancellor Professor Mamokgethi Phakeng would be leaving the institution.
UCT council chair Babalwa Ngonyama shared the news with the executive, senate, staff and students in a “private and confidential” internal memorandum.
The university council has dropped part of an independent investigation into the governance crisis at the institution related to the specific conduct of outgoing Phakeng.
Ngonyama — in a memorandum said the investigation panel headed by retired judge Lex Mpati would continue its work “without specifically considering or investigating the conduct of the vice-chancellor”.
While Phakeng has accepted an R12 million golden handshake from the Council, a disagreement has emerged over the announcement of her exit, in which she seeks to be exonerated.
Ngonyama said Phakeng would take early retirement, effective from 3 March 2023.
“The university has reached an agreement with Professor Phakeng, which requires any public announcements and press statements to be mutually agreed to between Professor Phakeng and the university,” the memorandum stated.
“Unfortunately, despite our best endeavours, we have not been able to reach an agreement as yet, and, as such, no public statement can be issued regarding Professor Phakeng’s departure and we urge you to keep this communication confidential.”
Ngonyama said council was urgently attending to the appointment of an interim vice-chancellor.
