The Congolese man accused of assaulting and torturing patrons at the Zanzou nightclub in Pretoria has been granted R10 000 bail.
The 41-year-old suspect appeared in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for the outcome of his bail application.
The accused faces a multitude of charges, including eight counts of compelled sexual assault.
He is one of the eight suspects linked to a graphic video showing male patrons being forced to sexually assault each other.
His arrest was executed by the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department officials on Thursday, 20 February 2025.
During the arguments for bail his application last week, State Prosecutor Advocate Anna Bosman revealed that the man entered South Africa without relevant documents that permit him to do so.
Bosman said they could not find any proof that he presented the documents when he first entered the country. He is said to have applied for the documents on the 14th of February, five years ago.
Bosman said although the accused applied for asylum, it is still pending, and he is in the country with only a temporary visa.
Defending the state’s view that the bouncer shouldn’t be granted bail, the prosecutor said should he decide to leave after being released, he will certainly find a way just like he did when he first entered the country.
The Gauteng liquor board has suspended the liquor license of Zanzou Nightclub. It announced that it was suspending the establishment’s license in terms of section 106(5) and 117(10) of the Act.
Defense Attorney, Nakedi Mamogobo, said his client harbours no anger against anyone and would appreciate staying in the country to continue working for his family.
Mamogobo argued that for the accused to remain in custody would exacerbate his family’s financial hardship, as he is the primary breadwinner.
He contended that the accused monthly income of R15 000, earned through his work as a general labourer and part-time bouncer, was vital to support his wife and three children living in Sunnyside.
Mamogobo told the court that the accused was also subjected to police brutality during his arrest.
Judgment on the accused bail application was reserved and expected on the 9th of April 2025.
Presiding Judge, Ernest Mbembele, handed down his judgment this morning.
In his ruling, Judge Mbembele dismissed State concerns and granted the suspect R10 000 bail. The case was postponed to 5 May for further investigation.
