Ten people died after an Interstate bus collided with a truck on the N8 between Botshabelo and Bloemfontein during rainy conditions on Saturday morning.
The accident took place near the RRR farming area at 06:35.
The Free State Road Incident Management, Sipho Towa, said the ten bodies were inside the wrecks on the accident scene.
Towa said, “A total of 41 people were affected in the crash. Five commuters are moderately injured, 19 with minor injuries, and six are critically injured.
Patients have been transported to Braamfisher Busamed Hospital, Pelonomi Trauma Hospital, and Botshabelo Hospital, added Towa.”
Traffic remains heavily affected in the area, and motorists are urged to proceed with caution and follow the instructions of officials on scene.
Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy has expressed their concern regarding the persistent trend of road crashes involving public transport.
Creecy have emphasized that the current review of the National Road Safety Strategy will strengthen efforts in promoting road safety in both the scholar transport and public transport system.
Meanwhile the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has advised that the central and eastern parts of South Africa are expected to experience widespread rainfall and severe thunderstorms, which both bring a risk of flooding, amongst others.
This will be due to an intense weather system, a cut-off low pressure, that is expected to affect the country from Saturday through to Monday (15 – 17 November 2025).
