Preparations for the 2027 Men’s Rugby World Cup advanced today with confirmation of the six pools that will shape the largest edition of the event yet. The next tournament will welcome twenty four teams arranged across six pools of four, a broadened structure intended to widen the game’s global reach and draw fresh audiences into rugby’s showcase competition.

Pool B contains South Africa, Italy, Georgia and Romania
Pool C contains Argentina, Fiji, Spain and Canada
Pool D contains Ireland, Scotland, Uruguay and Portugal
Pool E contains France, Japan, USA and Samoa
Pool F contains England, Wales, Tonga and Zimbabwe
The draw was broadcast live through multiple platforms including Stan Sport, Nine Gem and Nine Now in Australia, with global streaming available on Rugby Pass TV and the World Rugby YouTube channel. The presentation featured World Rugby Chair Brett Robinson, All Blacks great Dan Carter, former Wallabies captain James Slipper and Olympic gold medallist Alicia Lucas.
With the pools now locked in, supporters can begin mapping their journeys while teams turn their focus to the demanding task ahead. The full match schedule is expected to be confirmed on Tuesday 3 February 2026.
For the Springboks, the path is already shaping into a stern examination. A pool containing Italy, Georgia and Romania looks manageable on paper, yet the knockout bracket is far less forgiving. Current projections suggest South Africa are likely to meet either New Zealand or Australia in the quarter final. Victory there could set up a semi final against France. Should they progress again, a final against England or Ireland is a plausible outcome. It is a sequence that demands precision, depth and resilience throughout the tournament.
The 2027 format reduces the number of pool fixtures yet introduces an additional knockout round with the arrival of a Round of Sixteen. This is expected to create a livelier early phase and give emerging nations more meaningful opportunities to challenge established sides.
