President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended warm wishes to South Africa’s Christian community, wishing them a safe, peaceful, and reflective Easter weekend.
In a statement, Ramaphosa said, “For South Africa’s diverse Christian denominations and for Christians around the world, the Resurrection of Christ serves as a powerful call to personal renewal; and is an integral part of faith.”
“This timeless message of retaining hope amidst uncertainty resonates with us all,” he said.
The President is set to join congregants from the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) at their annual Easter celebrations in Moria, Limpopo, one of the country’s largest religious gatherings.
Reflecting on the significance of the holiday, he added: “The Easter weekend was a welcome break and a time for reconnecting with family and friends.
“No matter where we may be this weekend, let us take to heart the Easter message by observing ubuntu, empathy and tolerance – in our communities, in social gatherings, on the roads and above all, in our homes.”
Meanwhile the Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has issued a statement to prioritise the safety, dignity, and respect, especially for women, young people, and persons with disabilities, who remain among the most vulnerable.
“Let this Easter be a time where we reaffirm our collective responsibility to protect one another, especially those most at risk.
“No woman should feel unsafe, no young person should be exposed to harm, and no person with a disability should be left behind,” she said.
Chikunga emphasised that communities must act to prevent gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide, encourage responsible behaviour among youth, and ensure persons with disabilities are included and protected during all Easter activities.
