Mamelodi Sundowns defeated Saudi Arabian side Al Ahli 2-1 in a highly contested clash between the two sides as part of the Africa, Asia and Pacific Cup, the qualifying competition for the next stage of Intercontinental Cup.
Sundowns started the game well, dominating proceedings in early exchanges, but it wasn’t going to be easy against the experienced Asian champions, with players who have competed at the highest level.
The home side took a lead in the 17th minute when Nuno Santos headed in a well-delivered ball by Teboho Mokoena.
However, a minute later, defensive lapses and pressure from Firas Al-Buraikan saw Ronwen Williams guide the ball into his own net to make it 1-1.
Brayan Leon’s effort in the 34th minute from Santos cross was well dealt with by Edouard Mendy, with Thabang Matuludi’s goal-bound effort also getting stopped by the Senegalese short-stopper.
Al Ahli kicked off the second half with a high tempo, forcing Williams into a fine save in the 51st minute.
Moments later, Sundowns were forced to make a change in the defensive unit. Grant Kekana was forced out due to an injury, paving the way for Malibongwe Khoza.
The Brazilians regained the lead when a superb cross from the right by Matuludi picked out Santos to head in the bottom-corner and sealed a brace.
Saudi club probed the equalizer in a tense closing spell, but the Brazilians held on to their lead to advance to the Challenger Cup.

PSG, the 2025 FIFA Intercontinental Cup champions, received $5 million for their win last season, while runners-up Flamengo from Brazil received $4 million. Pyramids FC eliminated in the Challenger Cup, received $2 million.
