Johannesburg, (Gauteng) – This week’s Fortress Invitational is primed for a breakthrough victory by one of several in-form rookies on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings in what has overall been one of the strongest rookie performances on the Sunshine Tour this season.
Since the start of this R2.5 million tournament in 2022, it has showcased the finest current and rising talent on the Sunshine Tour, and this year’s field is no exception in a season where the established stars have been challenged by the rookies.
Their form over the past two weeks on the Sunshine Tour in particular suggests that any number of them could push through at Houghton Golf Club this week.
The field is a strong blend of established talent and new stars, with the top 10 players on the current Courier Guy Order of Merit in action as well as nine of the top 10 on the current Fortress Rookie of the Year standings.
It’s the kind of field that puts a broad smile on the face of Steven Brown, CEO of Fortress Real Estate Investments.
“Every year this tournament proves that when you invest in talent, talent delivers. We can’t wait to see who steps up at Houghton this year,” he says.
Samuel Simpson heads to Houghton as the leader on the Courier Guy Order of Merit with three victories this season already. The field then includes 11 of the 13 winners on the Sunshine Tour this season.
But in the last two tournaments alone, rookies have come close to claiming victories.
Cole Stevens, currently second on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, lost in a playoff to Kyle Barker for the Limpopo Championship. And this following his tied third finish in the Rwanda Open the week before.
Frenchman Benjamin Kedochim, currently leading the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, finished tied third in the Rwanda Open in a season where he also has top finishes of second and another third place.
Chile’s Agustin Errazuriz, third on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, finished third in the Limpopo Championship.
Daniel Cronje and Travis Procter – currently sitting fourth and seventh respectively on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings – both finished tied third in the Rwanda Open. And both have another two top-five finishes to their names this season.
Added to this is the fact that Oliver Goldhill, sixth on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, has finished second this season already and Joe Sullivan, ninth on the Fortress Rookie of the Year standings, has a fifth-place finish to this credit.
It all ties in perfectly with the overall vision of this tournament.
“When we started the Fortress Invitational in 2022, our goal was to create real opportunities for South African professionals. Four editions later, we’ve seen exactly that. Robin Williams won the Fortress Invitational twice and was named Fortress Rookie of the Year before going on to the DP World Tour.
“Last year, Warwick Purchase claimed his maiden title while competing for Fortress Rookie of the Year. That’s what powering growth looks like, and we’re proud to keep backing the next generation of South African golf,” says Brown.
“The fifth Fortress Invitational has become a fixture on the Sunshine Tour calendar, and our commitment hasn’t wavered. With the purse now at R2.5 million and R400 000 for the Fortress Rookie of the Year, we will continue to back today’s top competitors while investing in the emerging talent who will shape the future of the game.”
