A suspect linked to the killing of Rand Water executive Teboho Joala has been arrested in the East of Joahannesburg.
Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Tommy Mthombeni says police were led to an address in Thokoza where they apprehended the suspect and confiscated a firearm.
Mthombeni had earlier indicated that the head of serious and violent crimes in the province would be heading up the team tasked with the investigation.
He added that police are still looking for another three suspects linked to the murder and arrests will be made soon.
Joala and City of Johannesburg chief whip Sithembiso Zungu, were shot in full view of over 70 primary school pupils at a Rand Water event in the Zakariyya Park community hall, south of Johhanesburg.
At the time, Rand Water disputed reports that it did not provide security services to Joala after his protector was also killed in his car during the incident.
According to Zungu, he and Joala were seated next to each other when a man approached the stage and opened fire on Joala before turning the gun on him after he asked what was happening.
Zungu has blamed this on a security failure as Joala had been facing death threats.
Water and Sanitation Minister Senzo Mchunu, who attended Joala’s funeral, called on the police to prioritise the case.
