Belgium overturned the two-goal deficit to beat Senegal 3-2 in extra time at Seattle Stadium (also known as Lumen Field) in Seattle, Washington, USA on Wednesday in the round of 32 at the World Cup.
Youri Tielemans was fouled just before the end of the 30 minutes of extra time were finished and the referee awarded the penalty after a video review.
Habib Diarra and Ismaïla Sarr gave the Senegalese a 2-0 lead, but Belgium substitute Romelu Lukaku got one back in the 86th minute and Tielemans equalized in the 89th.
It was cruel on Senegal, who controlled much of the 90 minutes and also struck the woodwork twice, but could not see out the game.
Belgium now face the winner of Wednesday’s last 32 clash between co-hosts United States and Bosnia and Herzegovina in the next round in Seattle on Monday.
They became the fourth African side to bow out in a narrow defeat in the last 32 after South Africa, Ivory Coast and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
