The Blitzboks were crowned overall champions of the 2026 HSBC SVNS Series after edging Fiji in the final of the New York tournament on Sunday.

The 10-7 victory secured both the gold medal in New York and the overall series title for Blitzboks, who added the latest crown to their earlier triumphs in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver.

The Blitzboks came into the New York tournament knowing they needed to finish above Fiji with both sides on the same log points at the start of the tournament.

This was the Blitzboks’ fourth title in the six-tournament shortened SVNS Series, and so much credit must go to their coach Philip Snyman, who picked the side up from a slump, took them to a bronze medal at the Olympics, a World Championship title last season and now the World Series win.

The victory was also their seventh tournament win on US soil, underlining the fact they really enjoy playing in North America, and was added to their Vancouver Sevens title last weekend. Earlier in the season, they won the Cape Town Sevens and the Perth Sevens along the way.

It wasn’t all plain sailing – while Fiji kept themselves in the top three throughout the season, the Blitzboks had some poor tournaments by their own standards. They started off the season poorly with a fifth-place finish in Dubai, missing out on the semifinals, and a fourth-place finish in Singapore.

For Snyman, the victory was less about flashy rugby and more about the character his team showed under pressure.

“This was special, not because of the execution of play, but the heart and intensity to play for each other that was shown out there,” he said.

“They showed what the Springbok Sevens stand for and played for that jersey, and as a coach, you cannot be prouder of such an effort.

“The defensive effort was something else from minute one until the last play. In the final sequence of play, Fiji created an overlap here and there, but the guys never gave up, and they could not get through.”

“How some of those players got into some defensive positions to cover, I don’t know. But what I do know is that drive from within to get there. That is what we are about.”
