Burnley beat Sheffield United 2-1 to seal automatic promotion to the Premier League on Monday with the result also sending Leeds United up alongside them.
Leeds had earlier thrashed Stoke City 6-0 to go top of the Championship on 94 points with two matches remaining and needed Burnley to then not lose to third-placed Sheffield United to make sure they would finish in the top two.
Burnley duly obliged to join them on 94 points and leave Sheffield United on 86 points.
Burnley captain Joe Brownhill was the matchwinner, scoring twice on the night. He paid tribute to his team’s remarkable defensive record. He told Sky Sports: “I’m speechless. All that hard work this season.
“We’ve been written off so many times, people calling us boring. We’ve bored our way to the Premier League. It takes a whole team; it’s not just a back four, a goal keeper, it takes everybody.
“I don’t think a lot of the lads will sleep. I’m so buzzing for the lads that haven’t played Premier League football.”
Leeds’ players were also seen celebrating in live scenes from Elland Road. But Sheffield United will have to dust themselves down in preparation for the play-offs after missing out on a top two finish.
